5 U.S. Resorts Worth a Long Fall Weekend

Some weekends deserve a little more ambition.

A grand seaside resort, a Vermont country estate, a private island in the Florida Keys. Places where the accommodations are every bit as memorable as the destination, and checking out on Sunday feels like a terrible idea.

I’ve always believed that a truly exceptional hotel deserves more than a hurried two-night introduction. Give me an extra day for a fabulous dinner, an unexpected adventure, or absolutely nothing on the agenda.

From old-world grandeur to glorious indulgence, these five American resorts offer five very different interpretations of the perfect fall escape.

And not a single one requires a passport.

Sea Island Georgia, for the grand resort enthusiast

There’s something about a grand American resort that never goes out of style. And The Cloister at Sea Island has been getting it right for generations.

Set along Georgia’s beautiful coast, The Cloister combines gracious Southern hospitality, magnificent architecture, exceptional dining, championship golf, and a spectacular spa. It’s elegant without being stuffy, with just enough to do that three nights can disappear rather quickly.

Begin with a leisurely breakfast, spend an afternoon at the spa, explore the island by bicycle, and reserve a memorable dinner. Golf enthusiasts have plenty of reasons to extend their stay, while everyone else can happily enjoy the beach, beautiful grounds, and the pleasure of doing very little.

November brings crisp coastal mornings, pleasant afternoons, and a quieter pace on Georgia’s Golden Isles. Come December, Sea Island embraces the festive season with beautiful decorations and holiday traditions, making it equally appealing for a romantic escape or a family gathering.

We’re seeing pockets of fall availability at The Cloister starting around $1,400 per night. For a resort of this caliber, with its legendary Southern hospitality and grand seaside setting, that’s a rather tempting invitation to extend the weekend.

The Cloister is an excellent choice for couples, families, and friends who appreciate a traditional luxury resort with plenty of ways to spend their days.

For a larger gathering, we recommend you consider consider Sea Island’s private cottages.

Barnard, Vermont | For the Romantic Who Appreciates Having Everything Handled

Imagine being invited to an impossibly beautiful Vermont country estate, where extraordinary food, exceptional wines, museum-worthy art, and impeccable hospitality are simply part of everyday life.

Welcome to Twin Farms.

A member of Relais & Châteaux and one of America’s most exclusive luxury retreats, Twin Farms takes the country-house experience to an entirely different level. Each individually designed cottage and suite is a destination in itself, while the largely all-inclusive experience means practically every indulgence has already been considered.

It’s intimate, unapologetically luxurious, and wonderfully removed from the ordinary.

Explore the art collection, enjoy a private picnic, indulge in the spa, and settle in for an exceptional dinner. Depending on the season and conditions, outdoor pursuits might include hiking, snowshoeing, or simply admiring the Vermont countryside from somewhere warm.

November and December offer a quieter, more intimate interpretation of New England, with the possibility of early winter scenery.

We’re seeing November and December weekend rates ranging from $2,950-4,300 per night. Twin Farms’ largely all-inclusive experience covers exceptional dining, wines and spirits, and a generous collection of activities, making the stay as indulgent as it is effortless.

Twin Farms is one of those rare places where the greatest luxury is having absolutely nothing to think about.

Come for the extraordinary hospitality, settle into your own little corner of Vermont, and let someone else take care of everything for a change.

Little Torch Key, Florida | For the Traveler Who Prefers Palm Trees to Fall Foliage

Not everyone believes autumn requires sweaters, fireplaces, and changing leaves.

Some of us are perfectly content with turquoise water, warm breezes, and a cocktail that arrives without any particular urgency.

Accessible by boat or seaplane, Little Palm Island offers an intimate, adults-only escape in the Florida Keys, with just 30 bungalow suites and a wonderfully persuasive argument for doing less.

Arrive by boat, settle into your bungalow, reserve a spa treatment, and plan a romantic waterfront dinner. A snorkeling excursion or day on the water is an option, although we wouldn’t blame you for spending most of the stay enjoying the island.

November and December are appealing for a warm-weather getaway, particularly if you’re ready to exchange cooler temperatures for the Florida Keys.

We’re seeing rates for select nights starting around $2,700 per night at this ultra-luxurious Relais & Châteaux private-island retreat. November-December dates require a four-night minimum stay, which pairs beautifully with the resort’s Fourth Night Free promotion. A very good excuse to linger a little longer.

This is not a resort we’d choose for a packed itinerary.

Come for the privacy, the atmosphere, and the pleasure of having very little on your agenda.

Colorado Springs, Colorado | For the Grand Hotel Enthusiast

There are hotels, and then there are American institutions.

The Broadmoor belongs firmly in the second category.

Set against the Rocky Mountains, this legendary resort combines grand-hotel elegance with exceptional dining, a beautiful spa, outdoor adventures, and a setting that becomes especially appealing as winter approaches.

It’s the sort of place where you can spend the morning exploring Colorado and the afternoon wondering whether you really need to leave the hotel again.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast overlooking Cheyenne Lake, schedule an afternoon at the spa, and reserve a memorable dinner. Depending on the season, consider a visit to Seven Falls, a guided outdoor adventure, or simply enjoying the resort’s festive atmosphere.

November and December bring a different personality to Colorado Springs, with mountain scenery, cooler temperatures, and seasonal celebrations.

November and December are particularly tempting at The Broadmoor, with its Winter Spectacular offering rates from $380 per night on select dates, plus complimentary golf greens fees and 25% savings on suites. A wonderful excuse to enjoy this grand Colorado resort before the year ends.

Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing the right building and room category. The Broadmoor offers several accommodation experiences, and the view, location, and layout can make a meaningful difference.

Farmington, Pennsylvania | For the Traveler Who Believes More Is More

If you’ve read our recent feature article (Nemacolin: More is More), you already know how we feel about this extraordinary resort.

Three hotels, private residences, exceptional art, fabulous dining, a destination spa, golf, shooting, shopping, and a seemingly endless collection of experiences.

And somehow, the people manage to make the whole thing feel personal.

Nemacolin isn’t a place you visit simply to sleep between excursions. The resort itself is the destination.

Make time for the Woodlands Spa, explore the art collection, try sporting clays, enjoy a memorable dinner, and leave room for one of the property’s more unexpected activities.

And yes, I can personally recommend the arts-and-crafts classes.

Autumn is beautiful in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, while November and December introduce festive programming and the pleasures of a grand resort dressed for the season.

We’re seeing November rates at Nemacolin starting around $770 per night, and there’s an even better reason to linger. The resort is offering a complimentary fourth night when you book three, for eligible stays through December. Makes perfect sense for a resort where three nights simply aren’t enough.

We recommend at least four nights, preferably five.

We spent three nights at Nemacolin, and we barely scratched the surface.

Five exceptional resorts, each with its own interpretation of luxury. And while their personalities couldn’t be more different, they share one important quality: the experience is every bit as compelling as the destination.

These are places worth making time for, whether that means a few indulgent days for two, a celebration with friends, or a long-overdue escape from the ordinary.

Our advice? Choose the resort that speaks to you, give yourself enough time to enjoy it, and leave the details to us.

After all, a great getaway should begin long before you check in.

Filling the Nest can help you select the right resort, choose the accommodations that suit your style, explore preferred-partner benefits, and arrange the details that make a short escape feel extraordinary.
