Some things are just too good
to keep to ourselves.
By late October, everyone seems to have moved on to the holidays, as though the rest of the year has nothing interesting left to offer.
I would argue there is still quite a bit of living to do between now and New Year’s Eve.
Because I went shopping again, and some of the most interesting luxury travel opportunities are hiding in these final weeks of the year.
Think Lake Como without the summer crowds. A Scottish country estate when the fireplaces finally earn their keep. A few days somewhere warm before the winter rush. Or a hotel so extraordinary that you have absolutely no intention of leaving the property.
These aren’t escapes to file away for next year.

Passalacqua | Lake Como, Italy
WHY | You can experience Passalacqua after everyone thinks Como is over.
WHEN | November-December
Lake Como may be synonymous with summer, but one of its greatest hotels makes a compelling argument for visiting later in the year.
Unlike many of the lake’s seasonal hotels, Passalacqua stays open through the holidays, closing only from early January until early March. And November isn’t simply summer Como minus the boats. The experience changes with the season: chestnut walks, new-pressed olive oil, white truffles, cooking classes, afternoons by the fire and Thursday dinners in the wine cellar. Passalacqua even notes that lunches beside the lake can linger outdoors well into December.
And then there is the price.
WHAT I FOUND | November-December dates showing entry rooms from approximately $1,150 per night—roughly 70% below the tracked peak-season benchmark of $4,156 per night.
That is not settling for Lake Como in late fall.
That is getting Passalacqua.
FTN TAKE | Stay three or four nights and resist every temptation to over-schedule it. At this time of year, the hotel isn’t merely where you sleep. It’s the reason you came.

Gleneagles | Perthshire, Scotland
WHY | The grand Scottish country-house experience, with a very good reason to visit later in the year.
WHEN | November-December
There are hotels that work in autumn. And then there is Gleneagles.
The 850-acre Scottish estate was practically made for this moment: falconry, countryside walks, shooting, golf, spa afternoons, long dinners and the rather appealing prospect of returning from all of it to a roaring fire.
But here’s the reason I’d look now.
WHAT I FOUND | Gleneagles is offering up to 20% off its best available rate on midweek stays of two nights or more, with breakfast at The Strathearn and access to the swimming and fitness facilities included. The promotion extends into March 2027.
For a shorter escape, the Strathearn Soirée starts at £725, including an overnight stay, breakfast and a three-course dinner. Golfers can consider the Tee It Up package, starting at £955 for one night and a round on one of the resort’s three championship courses.

Suddenly, going later isn’t just atmospheric. Nothing about the experience feels off-season—except, perhaps, the price.
FTN TAKE | I’d give Gleneagles three nights rather than two and pair it with Edinburgh. This is the grand Scottish country-house fantasy at precisely the moment the country-house part gets really good.

Sea Island, Georgia
WHY | Because the holidays are even better when someone else does the entertaining.
WHEN | November 28–December 23, 2026
There is something rather wonderful about a Southern resort that knows how to do Christmas properly.
And Sea Island has had nearly a century of practice.
The Cloister is the sort of place where you can spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing productive and still feel as though you’ve had a spectacular day. Think long lunches, spa afternoons, championship golf, beautiful grounds and the kind of gracious Southern hospitality that makes leaving seem entirely unnecessary.
But here’s where the timing gets interesting.
WHAT I FOUND | Sea Island is offering 25% off room rates at The Cloister and The Lodge, plus a $75 resort credit for every night of your stay, for eligible stays November 28–December 23, 2026.
The catch? You must book by October 28.
And beginning December 1, Sea Island transforms into a holiday destination, complete with festive activities, special spa experiences and a life-sized gingerbread house.
That’s a rather compelling argument for celebrating the season without hosting a single person.
FTN TAKE | I’d choose The Cloister for three or four nights in early December. Enjoy the decorations, schedule a spa afternoon, make dinner reservations and let someone else worry about the details.
Christmas without the cooking, cleaning or entertaining?
I could get used to that.

Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection | Ilma in the Caribbean
WHY | Because three nights in the Caribbean can feel like an entirely different world.
WHEN | November–December 2026
Here’s one that might surprise you.
You don’t need two weeks, a complicated itinerary or even a particularly good excuse to escape aboard a luxury yacht.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is offering several short Caribbean voyages aboard Ilma, its beautifully appointed superyacht. Think private terraces, leisurely mornings, intimate harbors, exceptional dining and the sort of service that makes traditional cruising feel like an entirely different category of travel.
And unlike many luxury journeys, some of these require only a long weekend.
WHAT I FOUND | Several late-2026 Caribbean sailings are currently listed, including:
NOVEMBER 13–16 | 3 NIGHTS
Miami roundtrip | Bimini & Sandy Point
From $4,100 per person
NOVEMBER 27–30 | 3 NIGHTS
San Juan roundtrip | St. Barths & Virgin Gorda
From $4,100 per person
DECEMBER 4–7 | 3 NIGHTS
San Juan roundtrip | Virgin Gorda & St. John
From $3,500 per person
DECEMBER 7–11 | 4 NIGHTS
San Juan roundtrip | St. Barths, St. Martin & St. John
From $4,900 per person
And unlike some other luxury yacht offerings, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection includes multiple dining venues, selected beverages, gratuities and Wi-Fi in its cruise fare.
These are published starting fares per guest, based on double occupancy, and remain subject to availability.
FTN TAKE | ‘d choose one of the three-night Caribbean sailings for anyone curious about luxury yacht travel but reluctant to commit an entire week.
A few days of sunshine, beautiful harbors, extraordinary service and absolutely no need to unpack twice.
That’s my kind of long weekend.

Nemacolin | Farmington, Pennsylvania
WHY | Because 2,200 acres of luxury can be a destination all its own.
WHEN | November–December 2026
I recently told Forbes that September may be one of luxury travel’s best-kept secrets, and Nemacolin is exactly the sort of place I had in mind.
Set across 2,200 acres in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, this isn’t a leaf-peeping road trip requiring a cooler and sensible shoes. You get the fall landscape—and then return to serious dining, spa, golf, art, outdoor adventures and several very different versions of luxury accommodation.
WHAT I FOUND | Nemacolin is currently offering its Experience Package with resort credits based on the length of your stay:
Or stay a little longer: the resort is also advertising Buy 3 Nights, Get the 4th Free, available for eligible stays through December 2026.
And if you want to get into the holiday spirit early, Hardy’s Holiday Village runs November 20–December 31, with Thanksgiving festivities November 26–29 and the resort’s holiday light celebration on November 27.
The offers are subject to blackout dates and restrictions and cannot be combined.
Suddenly, spending four days in Pennsylvania sounds considerably more interesting.
FTN TAKE | Having experienced Nemacolin firsthand, I’d give it at least three nights. Choose your accommodations carefully, make time for the spa and the extraordinary art collection, and don’t underestimate how much there is to enjoy without ever leaving the property.
For a festive escape, I’d look at late November or early December. This is one of those rare resorts where the hotel is the entire destination.

Peter Island, BVI
WHY | A private Caribbean island with a rather compelling reason to return.
WHEN | October 21–December 2026
There are Caribbean resorts, and then there are private islands.
Peter Island belongs firmly in the latter category.
Set across 1,800 acres in the British Virgin Islands, this legendary resort has been beautifully reimagined, with just 52 beachfront rooms, suites and villas, five beaches, a spectacular spa and the sort of seclusion that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
And on October 21, Peter Island welcomes guests back for its new season.
WHAT I FOUND | Peter Island’s published booking calendar is currently showing starting rates of approximately $1,100 per night across a selection of November dates, including November 9–12 and November 16–19.
That’s approximately $3,300 for three nights before taxes, fees and any additional charges, subject to the actual room category and availability.
Even more interesting, an American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts promotion currently advertises a complimentary third night for eligible stays completed by December 23, with reservations made by December 19.
The complimentary-night promotion is specific to that booking program, so eligibility and combinability with other preferred partner benefits would need confirmation.
FTN TAKE | I’d give Peter Island at least three nights, preferably four. Choose a beachfront suite, spend an afternoon at the spa and arrange a private boat excursion if you can bear to leave the island.
Sometimes the most luxurious thing on the itinerary is the absence of one.

The Colony Hotel | Palm Beach, Florida
WHY | Pink looks even better before the winter crowds arrive.
WHEN | November 2026, before Thanksgiving
Palm Beach’s beloved Pink Paradise doesn’t need a January social calendar to be fabulous.
Come in November for Swifty’s by the pool, Worth Avenue around the corner and beach days delivered Colony-style—before the winter social season reaches its peak.
WHAT I FOUND | A November 2 stay at The Colony was recently showing rates from approximately $662 per night before taxes and fees, while a November 10–13 search showed a standard double room averaging approximately $1,054 nightly, including fees.
That’s a reminder that even within November, choosing the right dates can make a substantial difference.
And while the $400-something September rates have disappeared, there are still opportunities to enjoy Palm Beach before the holiday season reaches full swing.
For a hotel this fabulous, timing is everything.
FTN TAKE | Three nights at The Colony, preferably early in November. Lunch at Swifty’s, an afternoon on Worth Avenue, plenty of pool time and absolutely no need for an elaborate itinerary.
Palm Beach doesn’t require much convincing.
And pink is always in season.

There will always be another summer in Europe. Another peak season. Another reason to wait until the calendar tells us it’s officially time to travel again.
But some opportunities don’t work that way.
A yacht has a sailing date. A promotion has an expiration date. A legendary hotel has a room available at a price that makes you look twice.
And sometimes the place you’ve always imagined seeing at its busiest turns out to be even better after everyone else has gone home.
So if one of these made you stop for a second, pay attention.
October-December isn’t just what’s left of the travel year.
It might just be the best kept luxury travel secret of all.

The Luxury of Going Later
Peak luxury and peak season aren’t necessarily the same thing. Here’s why some of our favorite places get even better once everyone else goes home.
There’s still time. Tell us which one has your attention, and we’ll take it from there.
Rates, promotions and availability checked September 1, 2026 and subject to change. All rates are starting rates unless otherwise noted and may exclude taxes, fees and other charges.
Lake Como after the crowds, Gleneagles with the fires lit, Christmas at Sea Island, and a Caribbean escape aboard a Ritz-Carlton yacht. Seven extraordinary reasons to reconsider the rest of your travel calendar—and a few very good opportunities worth exploring before the year ends.
