When she's not designing or experiencing extraordinary adventures away from home, she's usually dreaming up the next one with her husband, "Poor Kent," spoiling pups, Olive and Basil, hosting an over-the-top gathering for family and friends, planning a themed event that somehow requires a glue gun, or searching for the next untouched corner of her home to redesign.

Most importantly she knows every great story starts with a little inspiration.

From VIP Airport Assist to oceanfront rooms, not every luxury upgrade delivers the same value. Here’s where we’d spend—and where we’d save.

Seven Luxury Upgrades Worth Every Penny

It’s a question I hear all the time, and it’s one of my favorites to answer.

Not because there’s a single right response, but because luxury travel isn’t about checking every upgrade box. It’s about understanding which investments genuinely change the way you experience a destination—and which ones simply make your wallet lighter.

Over the years, I’ve watched clients rave about things they never expected to matter—like having someone meet them at the aircraft door after an overnight flight or spending one quiet morning on an oceanfront balcony. I’ve also talked more than a few travelers out of upgrades that looked impressive but wouldn’t have added much to their trip.

These are the seven upgrades I recommend most often—and the occasions when I’d tell you to save your money instead.

1. A Private Guide Instead of a Larger Group

Worth it because…

The right guide doesn’t simply show you a destination—they unlock it.

A private guide adjusts the pace to your interests, skips what doesn’t matter, lingers where it does, and often opens doors that larger group tours simply can’t. Questions become conversations. Timetables become flexible. The day feels like it was designed around you rather than fifty strangers.

Best for

  • Historic cities
  • Art and architecture
  • Food-focused destinations
  • Milestone trips
  • Families with different interests or mobility needs
  • And 100% of the time, Disney and Universal theme parks

Skip it if…

The destination is one you’ve visited before and your only plan is to linger over long lunches, browse local shops, and let curiosity lead the way.

2. Private Airport Transfers

Worth it because…

Few travel moments are as stressful as arriving in a foreign country after an overnight flight.

Having someone waiting, handling luggage, monitoring flight delays, and knowing exactly where you’re going removes friction from the moment you land.

Luxury isn’t always marble lobbies and champagne.

Sometimes it’s never wondering where the taxi queue is.

Best for

  • International arrivals
  • Late-night flights
  • Families
  • Multiple hotels
  • Destinations with language barriers

Skip it if…

You’re traveling light, know exactly where you’re going, and secretly enjoy figuring out a new city’s train system before you’ve even had coffee.

3. Club Level or Executive Lounge Access

Worth it because…

This is one of the most misunderstood upgrades in luxury travel.

Done well, a club lounge becomes an extension of the hotel itself—a quiet place for breakfast, afternoon refreshments, evening cocktails, concierge assistance, and a peaceful retreat from busy public spaces.

For travelers who actually use it, the value can far exceed the additional nightly cost.

Best for

  • Resort vacations
  • Families
  • Longer stays
  • Hotels known for exceptional club lounges

Skip it if…

Your itinerary has you out the door at sunrise and returning only long enough to change for dinner. Save this upgrade for the vacations where lingering over breakfast or unwinding with an evening cocktail is part of the plan.

4. Oceanfront Instead of Ocean View

Worth it because…

This is one upgrade people rarely regret.

An ocean-view room might require leaning over a balcony or looking between buildings.

Oceanfront means the water becomes part of the experience—from sunrise coffee to evening cocktails with nothing but sea between you and the horizon.

If the destination itself is the reason you’re traveling, this upgrade often changes how you experience every day.

Best for

  • Beach destinations
  • Anniversary trips
  • Honeymoons
  • Relaxation-focused vacations

Skip it if…

You have zero intention of room service breakfasts or sunset cocktails on the terrace because you’ll be at sunrise yoga, paddleboarding by noon, and chasing every adventure until bedtime.

5. VIP Airport Assist

Worth it because…

There are few travel luxuries more valuable than having someone meet you at the aircraft door, escort you through immigration, assist with luggage, and guide you seamlessly to your waiting driver—or, on departure, whisk you through check-in and security with expert guidance.

In unfamiliar airports, after an overnight flight, or when every minute counts, VIP Airport Assist transforms what can be the most stressful part of travel into one of the easiest.

It’s not about skipping lines everywhere or feeling like a celebrity. It’s about having a knowledgeable professional navigate the airport so you can simply enjoy the journey.

Best for

  • International arrivals and departures
  • Complex airports
  • Tight connections
  • Multi-generational travel
  • Travelers with mobility concerns
  • Anyone beginning or ending a milestone trip

Skip it if…

You’re flying through a familiar airport with plenty of time to spare and are perfectly happy following the signs. Save this investment for the sprawling international hubs where an extra set of experienced hands can make all the difference.

6. A Suite—for the Right Occasion

Worth it because…

A suite isn’t simply a larger room.

It’s additional space to relax, entertain, recover from jet lag, enjoy room service without balancing dinner on the bed, and occasionally separate early risers from those hoping to sleep in.

For milestone celebrations, those extra square feet often become part of the memory itself.

Best for

  • Honeymoons
  • Anniversary trips
  • Multi-generational travel
  • Stays of four nights or longer

Skip it if…

You’ll spend nearly every waking hour exploring the destination and simply need a beautiful and centrally located place to sleep.

7. Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Worth it because…

No one purchases travel insurance hoping to use it.

They purchase it hoping they’ll never need it.

Complex itineraries involving multiple countries, cruises, private tours, significant prepaid expenses, or international medical care deserve protection.

It’s one of the least glamorous investments in travel—and often the one you’re most grateful to have.

Best for

  • International travel
  • Cruises
  • Family vacations
  • High-value itineraries
  • Trips planned many months in advance

Skip it if…

Very rarely. On inexpensive domestic trips with minimal prepaid costs and more importantly, minimal risk of emergency or medical situations requiring expensive evacuations and assistance, in this case you may choose to self-insure.

Perhaps that’s the real luxury.

Not choosing every upgrade simply because it’s available, but knowing which ones will genuinely change the way you experience a destination.

The best journeys aren’t built on excess. They’re built on thoughtful decisions made long before departure—and those choices often become the moments you remember most.
