Some things are just too good
to keep to ourselves.
People often assume Filling the Nest is about travel.
And, of course, it is. Beautiful hotels, extraordinary destinations, memorable meals, and experiences that stay with us long after the suitcases have been unpacked.
But I’ve always believed that the best journeys change more than our passports. They change our perspective. They introduce us to new ideas, different ways of living, and occasionally a bathroom so spectacular that we come home questioning every decision we’ve ever made about our own.
I have certainly been guilty of that last one.
Over the years, I’ve found myself paying as much attention to the details of a beautiful hotel as I do to the destination itself. The way a room is lit. The linens on the bed. The china at breakfast. The arrangement of furniture that makes an enormous space feel wonderfully intimate. The little touches that make you feel someone has thought of absolutely everything.
And inevitably, some of those ideas find their way home.

Our home just outside the city limits of New Orleans, known by the locals as “Old Metairie”, has been a work in progress for years. We’ve renovated, redecorated, reconsidered, and occasionally wondered what on earth we were thinking when we started another project.
Some changes have been substantial. Others have been small enough that only I would notice. Many have been dubbed “the final project”…all, to PK’s chagrin, were not.
But that’s the thing about creating a home. It’s never really finished. Or at least mine isn’t.
Somewhere along the way, I began referring to our house as Maison Fowler. Because apparently having a perfectly lovely home wasn’t quite enough. It needed a name.
And once you’ve named the house, well, there’s really no telling where things might go.
What began as a series of home improvements gradually became something much more personal: a collection of rooms that reflect where we’ve been, what we love, the people we’ve welcomed, and the life we’ve built.
There have been beautiful successes, a few expensive lessons, and more than one occasion when a seemingly innocent idea developed a rather ambitious budget.
Such is the price of having opinions. And too much access to the internet.

For a long time, I’ve wanted to give this side of Filling the Nest a proper home of its own.
Not because I’m suddenly becoming an interior designer. Or an influencer. I’m not. And certainly not because I’ve run out of places I want to visit.
Quite the opposite.
The more I travel, the more I appreciate the relationship between the places we experience and the spaces we create for ourselves.
AT HOME is where those two worlds meet.
We’ll share the evolution of Maison Fowler through Rooms Rewritten, our ongoing series about the rooms we’ve transformed, the decisions we’ve made, and the details that have given our home its personality.
But AT HOME will extend well beyond renovations.
There will be entertaining and tablescapes, favorite finds, design inspiration, collected treasures, and the occasional peek behind the scenes of a gathering that looked considerably more effortless in the photographs than it felt an hour before the guests arrived.
We’ll talk about beautiful things, certainly. But also about the stories behind them.
Because a home isn’t interesting simply because it’s beautifully decorated. It’s interesting because of the people who live there, the memories they make, and the little eccentricities that make it unmistakably theirs.

If you’ve followed Filling the Nest for a while, you’ve probably already seen glimpses of this world: a room under renovation, a dinner party, a favorite hotel detail that I couldn’t stop thinking about, or some new project that PK may or may not have been fully briefed on yet somehow went underway.
Now we’re simply opening the doors a little wider.
Welcome to AT HOME.
I’m delighted you’re here.
The places we go inspire the rooms we create, the tables we set, and the way we live. Welcome to AT HOME, where we’re opening the doors to Maison Fowler and sharing the beautiful details, occasional excesses, and stories that make a house unmistakably ours.
